In his 1964 Nobel Lecture at Oslo, Norway, Martin Luther King Jr reminded us to not let our “moral progress” fall behind our progress in science and technology.

He said:

“Yet, in spite of these spectacular strides in science and technology, and still unlimited ones to come, something basic is missing. There is a sort of poverty of the spirit which stands in glaring contrast to our scientific and technological abundance. The richer we have become materially, the poorer we have become morally and spiritually. We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers…

This is the serious predicament, the deep and haunting problem confronting modern man. If we are to survive today, our moral and spiritual “lag” must be eliminated. Search engine firms are really just ad companies and they’ve always read our emails to determine which ads will get us to click more ads.

It’s simple data mining.

Acting like it’s an invasion of privacy is foolish. If Google didn’t read our mail then they’d have no way to effectively do their job as an ad company. Thus they wouldn’t invest money in the tech that we desire and use.

To be honest Google’s losing money for not maximizing their data mining efforts.

I’m still shocked that #GoogleVoice has no audio ads telling you to, “press 1 before you call mom to buy that toaster she told you she needed during your last #VOIPcall”.

That’s #DataMining engagement to the next level.

My guess is that prior to ads being placed in G-Voice, we’ll see commercials before a Google #Hangout starts.

Too often have I received messages from recruiters on #LinkedIn , and other places, that feel generic, unrelated to anything that I do for a living and providing absolutely no info about the So-Called Opportunity that they’re offering.

Let’s be clear about what happens when you – #recruiter – send this out to people. If, and/or when, you have a real opportunity for someone that you’ve previously SPAMMED, they will not want to discuss it with you.

Why? Because it’s an unethical #business move to send a message directly to someone you do not know and not make it personal. It’s better to take the time to research the person and send a message that one can relate to. It’s more engaging that way, you’ll get more call backs that way and your value as a recruiter will maintain our respect.

So remember, stop #recruiting with SPAM.

Disclaimer: wait… That’s unless I’m really in the market for a job. But I’m not right now, so STOP IT.

What I really liked about the course was that it forced me to really fine tune a niche that I was both credible, confident and passionate about. Is was a challenging exercise (course work), that took me awhile to complete but it was so worth it.

The Facilitators, Steve Beck and Vickie Austin, were engaging and supportive throughout the entire course. Both, Steve and Lori, are accomplished speakers and with vast amounts of experience and wisdom in the speaking industry. All of which they openly shared with the class. In addition, there were also guest panelists (professional speakers) brought to every class that also shared their experiences with us. They were all great as well.

A long time ago I had high hopes for Google Videos but they eventually realized that it could never catch on. One thing that I can say for google is that they’re smart enough to know that if it doesn’t work, then let it go and move on by trying something else.

I really think that that is one of Google’s keys to success. We will not waste time on what doesn’t work… Period.

I have my own theory of what it means to be a Tech Lead…

It’s a unique set of technical and interpersonal skills finely blended into one person.

Someone who’s knowledgeable and passionate about programming, engineering or their particular field while also needing to work with people. Not around people but with people. A true Tech Leader can bring people together to create great technical solutions.

So, “Tech Lead” equals:
1. Technical Passion and Expertise
2. Ability to Encourage People

Though the phrase, Tech Lead, implies “leadership” it doesn’t necessarily mean that one is in a Management position. I’ve been influenced by many good (and great) Tech Leaders who’s job title didn’t shout “I’m in charge”. In many instances it’s these Informal Leaders who are really the drivers of great innovations.

The informal Tech Lead role is really a sweet spot where you have the responsibility to ensure that a project is successful without it all hanging on your shoulders. You’re combining your Technical know how and you ability to Influence others to create results.

A Great Tech Lead adds a third element. Great Tech Leads ensure that they understand the business because at the end of the day it’s the needs of the business that keeps the pay checks flowing.

-This means that they understand how the technical team works with and other teams like marketing, finance, sales and human resources.

-They’re aware of office politics. Not so that they can be involved but so that they can identify, predict and adjust when office politics influence business decisions, technical solutions and their particular team.

Now we’re at “Great Tech Lead” equals:
1. Technical Passion and Expertise
2. Ability to Encourage People
3. Understands and considers the business impact

What does Tech Lead mean to you?

This article poses the question. After reading it I realized that it’s difficult to tell an IT leader, particularly a high-level senior leader, that he or she doesn’t know what they’re doing in any capacity. This is because it’s a lose-lose situation. If you’re wrong, then you lose because… you’re wrong and if you’re right then you still lose because you’ve most likely bruised his/her ego. Bruising the ego of a senior leader means that you’re risking your ability to move upward in that organization.

For example, let’s say that you’ve told a senior leader, in public setting, that they simply don’t know what they’re doing in some capacity. Even if that leader doesn’t have the ability to help or stop you from making a career move the fact that you did so in public with place a feeling of caution in other leaders that are present. The fact here is that in any leader who has employees whom question their ability knows that those employees will eventually question their respect for that later leader as well.

The only safe way to tell a leader that he or she doesn’t know what they’re doing you have no desire to move upward in that organization career ladder.

I’m not saying that you can’t tell a leader that they’re wrong, mistaken or even that they don’t know what they’re doing. I’m just saying that one needs to do so with caution, finesse, tact and care because that’s what a leader.

Remember that when leaders feel that they need to tell someone that they don’t know what they’re doing, they patiently consider a person’s feelings, mindset and possible response and then the plan and practice how they’re going to deliver that message.
